From July to September each year when the rains descend on southwest China’s rugged mountains, hundreds of varieties of mushrooms erupt from the forest floors of northwest Yunnan. This journey only takes place at the height of this wild mushroom season and takes you from the heady buzz of mushroom markets to the edges of ancient cloud-forests and the Tibetan plateau, mostly on beautiful back roads.

This leisurely itinerary will also take you through smaller villages where time slows down. Explore morning markets, wander through Shaxi’s cobbled streets, watch endangered monkeys in Tacheng and visit a lively Tibetan monastery in Shangri-La.

This 9-day itinerary is centred around good food. You will eat extremely well, and touch, feel and smell these delicate wild mushrooms first-hand. Mushrooms will never be ever the same to you again after this experience!
